Ethopia's Milkesa Mengesha a ho hum two hours, three minutes, 17 seconds to beat Kenyan rival Cybrian Kotut on the final kilometre to win the 50th edition of the Berlin Marathon in personal best time on Saturday.

Tigist Ketema, 26, stormed to victory in a stunning solo run and her effort of two hours, 16 minutes and 42 seconds was more than two minutes ahead of fellow Ethopians Mestawot Fikir and Bosena Mulatie.

A record 58,212 runners from 161 countries had registered for the anniversary edition of the race.

Oh wow, I didn't know that they had so many runners this year. Berlin is the easiest of the three overseas World Marathon Majors to get into. London is near impossible, and Tokyo can be a challenge from what I have heard. Being so soon after the Olympics a lot of the big name runners skipped. I did recognize a number of masters runners doing well.
