I don't love potatoes in curry, but I'll eat them.

The site does remind me of https://someoneatethis.tumblr.com/, but without the irony or humo(u)r.

for the anthropologists, this is an important photo from Loretta:

clockwise, from the bottom left:
beet salad
pasta salad*
vegetable salad
mustard salad
iceberg lettuce
sliced tomato

so, ignoring the pasta salad, the others make up the potato salad trinity here... all start with a base of potatoes mashed with mayonnaise, vinegar and a touch of sugar... for beet salad, mash in pickled beets, for vegetable salad, mash in sweet pickle relish and finely chopped cooked or canned vegetables of your choice, for the mustard salad, some people only add yellow mustard, some people, like Loretta, add yellow mustard to vegetable salad

not pictured, Loretta also made corn and pineapple salad, which is drained canned corn and drained canned pineapple tidbits, mixed with mayonnaise... another traditional "festive" salad, but not as common as the beet-veg-mustard potato salad trinity

*oh, and for those as obsessed by the pasta salad debates as I am, Loretta's recipe is "green pepper, celery, tomato, cheese, shredded carrot, mayo, italian dressing, french dressing, celery salt, garlic powder, pepper, sugar, italian spice..maybe more...its not a written recipe..only in my head"

that is all part of Loretta's assembly line for traditional "cold plate"...

a scoop of each salad, some cooked roast turkey on top of dressing, some ham cooked with pineapple... and a garnish of one peice of lettuce topped with one slice of tomato

Hmm...vegetable salad.

I like that mashed potatoes are somehow "salad"

That was the very best one yet! I'm dying.

I will eat almost anything, but I'd have to be pretty hungry to eat a Traditional Cold Plate.

Canadian Thanksgiving.  Yum?

Canadian thanksgiving is next week! But Loretta did say a big thanksgiving feed... my guess is the coldplates were leftovers?

regardless, cold plates very popular over the last little while:

Catherine's sister brought her a cold plate from a baby shower (jello salad alert!):

Marilyn and Lionel made up cold plates for supper yesterday:

Millie also made cold plates yesterday

Carol did roast chicken last week, and cold plate with the leftovers (leaf lettuce, no beet salad!!)

So, it's like thanksgiving meats american-style picnic/bbq but cold?

it's just leftover roast meat and cold salads, really... turkey gets roasted here for ordinary sunday dinner fairly frequently... turkey is popular enough that some restaurants have a "soup of the day" AND a "turkey soup of the day"... so turkey cold plates are common year round...

also, cold plates are big for fundraisers in rural NL... the baby shower cold plate might have been to raise some cash for the new parents... but they are used to raise money for sports teams, churches, girl/boy scouts, playground equipment, libraries, etc. etc.

That was confusing-- for some reason I typed "meats" but I meant "meets".  :D So, I revise my mash-up to thanksgiving leftovers & american style bbq.

For fundraisers is this like a bake sale, where one person brings the yellow salad and another brings vegetable salad, and so forth? And then people buy it and eat it for dinner? Like, you'd buy 4 plates for your family and then eat them at home?

We have things like pancake breakfasts and spaghetti feeds here (I haven't seen one in a while but it's a concept I'm familiar with) but you eat at the event.

Is this something you would feel nostalgic for if you left the region? We really do  not have anything even remotely close to that here. Maybe Hawaiian plate lunch would be the most similar?

so for fundraisers, yes, a pile of volunteers bring parts of the dish (like Mary and Joanne might bring beet salad, John and Lorna might bring pasta salad)... generally some store will donate turkey, or some pot of money will buy the meats... and the plates get sold for pick up/takeout from a hall or church basement... usually paper plates and plastic wrap

moose sausage breakfasts are also common out here... like the pancake breakfasts, those are usually eat-in

regarding nostalgia, I never buy cold plates... I can admit to liking the beet salad, but who wouldn't love cold pickled beet mashed potato??  :d

Natasha

I am very intrigued by the cold salads, especially the beet salad.

The cold plates as fundraisers makes me feel warm and fuzzy.  It reminds me of church potlucks.  Somehow comforting.

I love beets so the beet salad is intriguing!

They remind me a bit of Israeli salatim although I suspect they don't taste quite as good...

caribougrrl

in the cafeteria downstairs today, there were cold plates for sale... but without the potato salads

deli meats, one slice each of roast chicken (or turkey? hard to tell), roast beef, ham
1/2 hard boiled egg
4 cubes of marbled cheese
pasta salad
coleslaw
leaf of iceberg lettuce
slice of tomato

I did not buy one, but I did wish I had my phone with me to take a picture.
