I think it would have to double back to the supernatural angle, which would defeat the purpose of the rational twist ending.

Like, maybe there would be some kind of psychic cloud hanging over that area of Greenland/Canada and the lead poisoning opened up a certain part of their mental perception so that they had a shared mental experience. but again, that kind of weakens the twist. May as well just be a real monsta.
