lupini beans (canned) were on sale the other day, like big time on sale, and because I'm this kind of person, I bought lots of cans of lupini beans even though I've never cooked with them before

I've got some in a marinade with shallot and orange zest and aleppo pepper and castelovero olives... but other than marinating them, what should I be doing?

I had to google them! I didn't know what they were. They look yummy though!

I grew up eating these, but they were always a snack - just pop off the outer shell and straight into my mouth. I've never had them as part of a recipe.

What do they taste like? Are there other similar beans that you could do a sub for in a recipe?

Natasha

I've never heard of them before either. Curious to hear what you think of them.

I've had them before by way of buying them already lightly pickled and sold as a snack. They are super-firm, a bit chewy, a wee bit bitter... right up my alley.

So far my internet searches have turned up: lots of ways to eat them as a snack, from salted to marinated. One spanish recipe for braising them (looks not bad). Also that they seem to be called chochos in Ecuador and are eaten with corn nuts there.

I googled them and saw that they can be poisonous (!) if not prepared properly!!

and eaten in quantity!

my working theory is that the canned ones are prepared property already... so far I am not dead

it looks like they are called tarwi in Peru, so I will go down that rabbit hole later... I've also seen some people turn them into a hummus, but I feel like they would not make a good hummus... maybe a good hummus topping though

That's true of kidney beans as well.
