Yoga helped my piriformis with sciatica impingement from hell.  Mine was so bad that my leg would go numb (but the painful pins and needles numb)  and it was like trying to run on a wooden leg that was on fire.

Hah!!!! The only one I disagree with is the Reese's Pieces. I freakin' love those things. :D

I love them too!  They are WAY better than M&Ms.

And yes, I have bought the rice krispy treats as breakfast food.
Ellen stole my joy and I want it back!

Meri, those are fucking hilarious!!  I love me some spray painted styrofoam peanuts!  :D  And Reese's Pieces.  Mmmmmm.

diablita

There is nothing like that orange cheesy goodness.

My neighbor always has a huge bin of cheetos. Hard not to stick my hand in there  :sneaking:

I was just about to ask you what you were doing in the food forum if you're fasting!  :)

The worst day of fasting I ever had was a day that my family was fasting for my aunt, who had some medical issues.  I spent the whole day working on menu spreadsheets for work.  It sucked!  (Normally I only fast the first Sunday of each month, and it's easier to avoid food on the weekend.)

How long do you fast for, Nadra?

It's supposed to be about 24 hours, starting after dinner the night before, skipping breakfast and lunch, and ending with dinner that night.  In practice, I'm not really strict on the actual number of hours.  I start my fast in my evening prayers when I go to bed, and tend to eat dinner earlier than usual when I'm fasting.

merigayle

i commend you ladies, i can barely fast for a morning fasting blood test without passing out :D

Gotcha.  Is it for internal reflection or (spiritual) cleansing or something else?

:d  it's usually ok until the last few hours, today was just particularly tough b/c of the Zyrtec.

It's easier if you're fasting with a purpose, for me anyway.  We believe that fasting, when combined with prayer, brings us closer to the Lord and can help prepare us and others to receive blessings.  If I'm trying to overcome a weakness or understand something about the gospel, or if I'm fasting so that others may receive blessings, I can think about that when I get hungry and it takes my mind of of the hunger.  If I don't have a purpose and I'm just fasting because I'm supposed to, it's harder to refocus my thoughts and I definitely think about my stomach every.other.second!  You get used to it, too.  I've been doing it my whole life (well, since I was eight), and now it's just something I do.

I kind of touched on that above, but in a nutshell we fast to strengthen us spiritually, to draw closer to the Lord, and to prepare us (or others) to receive blessings.  One way of looking at it is increasing the intensity of your prayer, if that makes sense, or overcoming the physical so that we can focus on or more fully receive the spiritual.  What about you?  I know that fasting is traditional on some of the holy days, (maybe all of them?) but don't know much more than that.

diablita

That does make sense and is a part of this fast.  There are a few fasts in our culture but the big one is on Yom Kippur (the holiday that started last night and ended at sundown).

The idea behind the holiday is that we've begun the new year (started on Rosh Hashana, last Monday) and had a few days b/w that day and this one to reflect on last year and the things we are sorry for/wanted to do better.

The idea behind the fast (along with not focusing on other physical needs like bathing, adorning yourself, etc) is that by ignoring all of those physical needs you can spend the day focusing on the spiritual and strengthen your connection with G-d as you ask for forgiveness.

That makes a lot of sense to me.  Thanks for your explanation.

Magic Microbe

I don't know how y'all fast. I get a terrible headache followed by dizziness if I get too hungry.

and for fasting, i have taken a bunch of Qi Gong classes and they always want you to fast, probably some spiritual enlightenment stuff, but sheesh, i never make it past lunch.

Meri I loved those pics....lol.   sorry AF is being weird though, I'm dealing with similar issues this time around.

Dev, have you seen the Fresh Beat Band live segment on Nick lately?  That's from their Charlotte show.  Have you told J yet?

I can only fast if I don't realize it or I get too busy for a chance to eat.  If I have to purposefully fast then it is the hardest thing ever.

We did 1.5 miles of trails yesterday with kids and I did 4 miles this morning with the dog.  Luckily I have a short work day.  My eating still sucks.
