This means plants right?

Well, with *this* group...

cgraz

At least the rain here is bringing some of our greenery back to life...things were looking pretty brown for a while, so my options for the greenery shots were getting limited!

Are we looking for theme ideas for August and beyond?

I hope so.  This is fun.

Absolutely.  Start posting more ideas and I will randomly choose dates for them.

TK

It looks like we need some more ideas for themes.  What do you guys think about:

Night
Mirror
Animal(s)
Metal
Black and White
Your favorite thing

Do we think any of these are winners?

cgraz

Those sound like they have some potential.  :)

I was trying to come up with something around the idea of mood...seeing a photo that someone described as "pure joy" made me think along those lines. I don't know whether it would work to say mood in general, or to put particular moods/feelings out there...joy, fear, creepy, funny, etc.

I think these are all usable.  cgraz, we did film noir a while back, which was all about mood.

People have mentioned techniques as a theme in the past.  What about:
bokeh
depth of field
painting with light (the way I did my glass and faucet)
single light source (like tk did his lens)

TK

Ellen, I love all of these.  What is the difference between bokeh and DoF?  I kinda though they where the same thing as long as by DoF you mean shallow DoF.

I think my favorites from these lists are:
Painting with light
Single light source
Night
Metal
and mood, but i think this one needs refining some but i am not sure how.

Eco Ellen

I believe bokeh is the focus on the blurred background (see Heavy's greenery submission).  Depth of field could be either shallow or full, but the focus has to be, and the viewer's attention should be on, the depth of field of the main subject - not the background itself.

Does that make sense?  Hell, maybe they are the same thing, but I didn't mean them that way, because I believe the focus is on something different and that should be communicated through the photo.

HeavyFeet

Bokeh coincides with a shallow depth of field.  It's the blurred out background that helps to isolate a subject in the foreground.

Different lenses produce different bokeh effects.  Basically, the shape and number of blades in the shutter have a lot to do with it...

Sooooooo, how about shallow depth of field, and big depth of field?

HeavyFeet

sure :)

also, how about...

morning.
night (did we already do this?).

How about "inspired by" topics?  Brassai. Man Ray. Cartier-Bresson.

(I went to the Met's 'Framing a Century' exhibit this past weekend, and I'm all re-impressed with some of the early masters)...

TK

Of coarse.  Why didn't I think of that.  Halloween it is.
